1939

Won't you give me your hand tonight?
I left my armies at home to die
See I'm fighting this war alone
My love, my love
Parachute dreams are filling my mind
And I'm too heavy to fly away today
These bombs are exploding slowly
Like birthday balloons
Bloodshot eyes and windblown hair
I'll sing you a song, so don't be scared
These fires will fade away,
with November rain
Something about you reminds me of
roses of yesteryear
If only 1939 were forever here
Won't you give me your hand tonight?
I left the rebels at school to hide
See I'm fighting this war alone
My love, my love
If only 1939 were
If only 1939 were
If only 1939 were

For Josephine
03:40
|
|||
I opened the book,
you broke the binding
and pages collapsed
like heavy bullets
they pierced through the soil
as unfruitful seeds
sat in the sediment beneath the cover of
strawberry leaves
and breathed shallow breaths
tucked in the soil
sunk to deeper depths
over and over as a cold wind blew
I never knew
what good could come of this as bluebirds sing softly
far above the trees
Hey, this is not a game.
though you're trying hard to make it that way
now you speak in a foreign tongue
that you wield like a double barreled gun
and you still think that I'm some prodigal son
just waiting
to come home
No, I can't love you again
there are things I see, I couldn't see back then
and it's so easy to view the past
through your technicolor dream lens looking glass
you know the best of us could never last
time will sink you
like a stone

Brand New Page
03:38
|
|||
I try to sleep as someone shouts a soliloquy
from a third floor balcony
Mary Magdalene on a megaphone
drownin' out the baritones
but what would you do
in those ragged shoes?
I doubt you'd have a clue
And to throw a stone
when you're most alone
now that would be some news
Champagne eyes in the early morn'
kissed by the mona lisa dawn
she's drunk again though no one sees
the things behind the sun
no one cares for a tragedy
turn the channel find a situational comedy
a brand new page
for old mistakes
sounds like a perfect plan
And I've been plagued as of late by insomnia
lullabies don't stop my head
from thinking thoughts I can't explain
a strangers face in the midnight rain
the music never lasts
Debussy in an hourglass
I just need a nocturne
that'll forever burn
a candle without wind
In the missile silo afternoon
as the sun hides behind the moon
everything around me is melting fast
as this taxi cab runs out of gas
left you in Brooklyn
they say the bridges are all broken
and I wouldn't miss
the Apocalypse
for just any girl
So I sit alone on the sidewalk
let all the others talk
I'll meditate on this mountaintop
and watch the world melt away
I'm finally getting tired now
it might be time to sleep
but when you're lost in yourself
there's no real way to tell
just how to get back home

Lazy River
02:21
|
|||
Let's go down to the lazy river
where we started out
oh it seems so long ago
I remember when we were young
I'm brokenhearted now
and I can't help myself if it shows
When we said goodbye
I nearly died, yeah you know
and the past sleeps alone
in a glass bottom boat
that we rowed all day in the sun
Where do I turn, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
Where do I go, without you near?
When you smile you know I can't contain
these emotions
when I think about what we had
I try to forget but I can't pull myself
from your potions
with my head in the sky and my heart underneath your shoes
When we said goodbye
I nearly died, yeah you know
and the past sleeps alone
in a glass bottom boat
that we rowed all day in the sun
Where do I turn, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
Where do I go, without you near?

Lately
05:09
|
|||
Lately times have got me down
lately I've been so strangely afraid
of all the things that could happen to me
of all the things I know I cannot be
Lately love has been a game
that we play so seriously
lately love has been a dream
and I just want to go back to sleep
Lately things aren't what they used to be
I'm searching for something I lost at sea
is this what you wanted now that I can't breathe?
I'm hangin' on by a thread, can't you see
See the girl with the red dress on
she don't act like she knows me at all
She smiles and makes the rounds
and I am just another face in the crowd
yeah lately love has been a dream
and I just want to go back to sleep
Lately things aren't what they used to be
I'm searching for something I lost at sea
is this what you wanted now that I can't breathe?
I'm hangin' on by a thread
I'm hangin' on by a thread
I'm hangin' on by thread, can't you see
